Hands-free mooring now at Eisenhower

CSL’s M/V Baie Comeau became the first vessel on Oct. 2, 2018, to go through the St. Lawrence Seaway’s Eisenhower lock without the help of wires. The smooth transition reflects the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation moving closer toward facilitating hands-free mooring (HFM) throughout the Seaway system.

The progress is in collaboration with Canadian St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation and SLSDC employees who’ve been working diligently to install HFM operation equipment and controls. HFM installation at the Snell lock is proceeding on schedule and expected to be ready to use during the first half of the 2019 navigation season.

HFM marks the biggest change in Seaway technology since the system opened almost 60 years ago. It has involved a tremendous amount of planning and resources to develop the necessary infrastructure, engineering maintenance and operational procedures for its successful implementation. The result will be faster, more efficient transits and increased safety for employees and customers.
