About BC Ferries Fleet Maintenance Unit

BC Ferries’ Fleet Maintenance Unit (FMU) site in Richmond, BC, serves the BC Ferries (BCF) as the primary ship repair and maintenance location.  This facility is vital to BCF operations to ensure safe, reliable and efficient service to the millions of customers who depend on the ferries. For over 40 years, work performed at the FMU includes engine and mechanical overhauls, electrical, painting, welding, repair and overhaul of life saving appliances, plumbing and various other skilled trades.  FMU provides 30-40 per cent of total BCF fleet ship repair, refit, modification, and maintenance services annually.  The FMU is a core strategic business unit that needs to function at peak efficiency.  Other work, including all dry dockings, is conducted by other external local shipyards.

There are approximately 250 BC Ferries employees working daily at the Richmond FMU. During the peak vessel refit period (September through May) there can be up to 350 people working on the site, including contracted service providers and other BCF technical support groups.

The Fleet Maintenance Unit has dedicated safety coordinators as well as trained emergency response team members that provide oversight, guidance and support for all employees related to Health, Safety and Environmental protection. The facility was certified through Green Marine in 2016 and continues to advance the environmental program through training and implementation of new strategies and tactics.
