A new hybrid ferry for Seaspan

December 10, 2016

The Seaspan Ferries Corporation welcomed the Seaspan Swift, the first of two new dual-fueled/hybrid (diesel, liquefied natural gas and battery) ferries to its fleet in British Columbia.

The new state-of-the-art vessel was built at Sedef Shipyard in Istanbul, Turkey. The 148.9-metre (488-foot) ferry, which can accommodate up to 59 trailers, will undergo a series of regulatory inspections and crew training programs throughout December before entering Seaspan service on January 2, 2017.

The Seaspan Swift will reduce Seaspan’s greenhouse gas emissions dramatically compared to other current alternatives while also delivering the highest level of efficiency, performance and reliability. The Seaspan Swift, along with its sister ship the Seaspan Reliant, mark the first vessels added to the company’s fleet since 2002. The Seaspan Reliant is expected to arrive in Tilbury, B.C., in early 2017.
