Green Marine expands to Atlantic Canada

Quebec City, Quebec (March 2, 2011)- Green Marine, a program aimed at improving the shipping industry’s environmental footprint, is pleased to announce that Atlantic Towing Limited has joined as its newest participant.

Atlantic Towing operates a diverse fleet of Harbour Tugs, Coastal Tugs, Barges and Offshore Support Vessels. The company is part of J.D. Irving, Limited and has offices in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Atlantic Towing becomes the first Atlantic Canadian shipowner to join Green Marine since the program opened its doors to companies outside the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence region in 2010.

“Through our ISO 14001 Environmental Management System we already have a number of initiatives underway to reduce the environmental impact of our activities. In addition, our EverGreen Tug Technology™ [hybrid tugs] is in the final stages of development. We have joined Green Marine to share environmental innovations and best practices.” said Sean Leet, General Manager of Atlantic Towing.

Green Marine, the first program of its kind in North America, aims to improve participants’ environmental performance beyond regulatory compliance by requiring them to introduce best practices, reduction targets and/or new technologies to improve their record in areas such as invasive species, air emissions and greenhouse gases, cargo residues, oily waters among others.

Although voluntary, all results are independently verified by a third party and shared publicly to demonstrate participants’ environmental commitment. Green Marine has endorsements from high profile NGOs including Ducks Unlimited and the World Wildlife Fund and was recently recognized by the Mayors of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative with a special resolution supporting the Green Marine initiative. On the international stage, Green Marine was nominated for Green Shipping Initiative of the Year and was a finalist at the 2010 Sustainable Shipping Awards in London.

Initially founded by Canadian and U.S. companies in the St. Lawrence and Great Lakes region in 2008, Green Marine has recently expanded into the West Coast and New York and aims to implement its environmental program throughout North America. More than 50 shipowners, port authorities and terminal operators are currently part of the program.

David Bolduc, Green Marine’s executive director, said: “The Green Marine program has really gained momentum. We hope that the participation of Atlantic Towing will pave the way for further expansion of the program in Atlantic Canada. The success of Green Marine demonstrates that the marine industry, as a whole, is joining together and taking action to minimize its impact on the environment.”
