By becoming a member of Green Marine, you can help strengthen the North American marine sector’s environmental performance through a process of continuous improvement, build stronger relations with stakeholders, and improve the awareness of the marine industry’s activities and its environmental benefits.
Participants are shipowners, ports, terminals, shipyards and Seaway corporations operating in Canada or in the United States.
Benefits for participants:
Green Marine’s participants are committed to continuously reducing their environmental footprint. Each year, they benchmark their environmental performance through Green Marine environmental program’s detailed framework. Green Marine certification process is rigorous and transparent. Fees for participants vary according to the company’s type and scope of activity.
Supporters encourage and support the sustainable development initiative undertaken by the marine industry.
Benefits for Green Marine Supporter:
There is no fee to become a Green Marine Supporter. This category of membership is open to governments, municipalities, communities, environmental groups, academics or research centers, etc. The supporting organization must complete a letter of support. Supporters receive a variant of the Green Marine logo that they can use to demonstrate their support of the Green Marine initiative.
Partners are suppliers of services, products, technology and/or equipment that offer environmental advantages or opportunities to help Green Marine participants to improve their environmental performance. Each new partner has to provide a short statement on how they meet the above criteria. Partners may display the Green Marine logo, showing their commitment to the Green Marine initiative.
The benefits of becoming a Green Marine Partner include:
As Green Marine Partners, companies agree to respect the Program’s communication policy related to the use of the Green Marine logo and to demonstrate their support of the Green Marine initiative. Partners annual membership fees vary from 600$ to 1000$ depending on the size of the organization.
As Green Marine is both an individual project (each participant pledges to improve its environmental performance) and a marine industry group undertaking, industry associations have a crucial role to play vis-à-vis their members.
In addition to improving the industry’s environmental performance, Green Marine seeks to create and strengthen dialogue and joint efforts between the stakeholders and partners that support the industry in its sustainable development approach, namely: governments, environmental groups, research centres, etc.
By joining Green Marine, associations agree to serve as ambassadors for the environmental program by encouraging their members to join and /or endorse the program and promoting the efforts and successes of Green Marine to industry partners, government authorities and other stakeholders.
Benefits for Green Marine Association members:
Green Marine newsletter The Green Wave is released every two months and presents Green Marine latest members and all relevant information regarding the environmental program. It also showcases Green Marine members’ best practices and green initiatives in its Spotlight on Partners and Industry success stories sections.
What’s nice is that more of our customers – ports and terminals – are now also participants, and we’re on the same page when it comes to the environment. Now that we’ve shown how much we’ve been able to accomplish in only five years, I hope more companies, particularly in the United States, will look at what this program has to offer them.Kirk Jones, Vice-president for sustainability, government and industry affairs, Canada Steamship Lines (CSL)
